On June 8th, an 83 lb Gray Wolf, known as OR-54, was seen near Boreal Mountain, just over a mile from Interstate 80. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife have been tracking the two year old female, believed to be the offspring of the first Gray Wolf to wander back into Northern California from Oregon in 2011, with a collar that notified local authorities of her presence in the area. She’s a known roamer, having traveled over 1,000 miles in multiple trips from Southern Oregon to Northern California since biologists have been monitoring her. While it’s unknown for now why she continues to wander so far from her pack, wolves can travel up to 50 miles a day and have been known to travel for weeks at time.

This is really exciting news! The Gray Wolf was once a California Native species before its likely extirpation in the 1920’s. Guess what?! Less than 10 miles from where she was spotted near Donner Summit, Placer Land Trust has protected 248 acres of pristine, wooded habitat near Kidd & Cascade Lakes forever! We hope she visits soon!!
As camping season is starting up, please be aware of your surroundings and maintain a respectful and safe distance from wildlife. While Gray Wolves don’t usually pose a threat to humans, if seen, do not approach these animals and report them to the CDFW.
