Date & Time: February 14th, 2024, 5:30pm-7:30pm

Location: Canyon View Preserve, Auburn, at the Bowman Exit on 80

About This Event: This is our first docent-led public activity at Canyon View, and you are in for a unique treat for the whole family! Canyon View Preserve has surprising biodiversity for its size – including fascinating night-time insects that glow in the dark under UV light. Docents will bring UV lights and take guests on the 1.5 mile loop trail, checking out the favorite spots to find millipedes and other glowing night-crawlers. After dark, nature has a way of illuminating what we often walk past in the daylight!

Distance and difficulty: Between 1.5 – 2 miles, approximately 2 hours. It is a slow-paced, easy-moderate hike with lots of stops to look for critters and with 150 ft of elevation change.

Who should attend: This hike is for anyone who can hike the distance at a slow pace for 1.5 – 2 miles and be on their feet for up to 2 hours. This is a family-friendly event where children are welcome. There is no age minimum, however, parents must stay with their children. No strollers, please! Plan to carry any young children as the trails do not accommodate strollers. Dogs are allowed at Canyon View on leash, but due to the nature of this event and being in the dark, we ask that you please leave your dogs at home.

This is a free event; however, donations help make these activities possible! We suggest a donation of $10 per person or $25 for a family. You can donate during registration, and we’re happy to accept cash or a check at the event in an envelope with your name written on it.

About Canyon View Preserve:

This is a perfect spot to take in the view of the American River canyon and the Sierra Nevada mountains in the distance. This 50 acre Canyon View Preserve was protected by Placer Land Trust on December 31, 2003. Previous to its protection, this land was considered for subdivision and development. Now, as a permanently protected nature preserve, Canyon View Preserve will continue to offer wildlife habitat, recreation opportunities, and scenic open space forever. There is surprising biodiversity on this Preserve, and our website hosts a Wildflower Guide, Tree Guide, and Bird Field Guide to further explore the species that call this Preserve home. The Preserve is located just north of Auburn, CA and borders the Auburn State Recreation.
