The new year is here! Join us to welcome 2019 with a guided group hike on Saturday, January 12.
You’ll see some great views from the top of Big Hill and learn about the local flora and fauna, our organization, and our mission to protect natural and agricultural land in Placer County for current and future generations.
The Big Hill Preserves contain interesting rock formations, the gently flowing Raccoon Creek, and spectacular panoramic views of the Sierra Nevada foothills and Sacramento Valley.
This hike begins at 10:00am.
DISTANCE: The hike will be approximately 4-5 miles, and may take 3-4 hours depending on the pace of the group and how many stops are made along the way.
DIFFICULTY: Moderate with uphill and downhill travel, on uneven ground and rough terrain. 500 foot gain in elevation. Please wear sturdy hiking or walking shoes.

This is a wilderness outing in a natural setting so please plan ahead and bring what you will need.
We have a “leave no trace” policy – if you pack it in, please pack it out.
Please wear sturdy hiking or walking shoes (no flip flops or crocs), clothing appropriate for the weather conditions (long pants are recommended), and bring a hat, sunscreen, and/or mosquito repellent.
Bring plenty of water and a brown bag lunch or snacks to enjoy along the way. Don’t forget your camera!
Sorry, dogs are not allowed on our Preserves, unless service animals.
Children under age 8 are not recommended for this hike, but please use your discretion as you know your child best. Parents are responsible for their children.
Participants must sign a release of liability available here: 2018 Blank Liability Waiver Photo release_revAug17 Please print and bring it with you. One form per person. Parent signature is required for children under 18.
We ask for a suggested $10 donation per person made online when you register for the event: https://www.placerlandtrust.org/donate/ . We can also accept checks at the event.
Important Note: Our Big Hill Preserves (including Taylor Ranch Preserve) are not yet open to the public. But because we do want you to enjoy them, we are offering this guided activity which is open to the public by advance registration. Other than our guided activities and our land management activities, Placer Land Trust does not grant permission to individuals to be on our Big Hill Preserves. Please help us respect the neighborhoods around these preserves by only visiting during scheduled guided activities that you are registered for. Trespassers will be prosecuted.
The roads surrounding our preserves are private and NOT designed for public foot or bike traffic. Any use beyond that creates a safety hazard for all. Please help us spread the word and respect private property throughout the County. Future open public access of our Preserves depends in part on good neighbor relations and public awareness. Meanwhile, your donations to Placer Land Trust will help accelerate the timeline to open these Preserves to public access by allowing us to leverage community support to partner with Placer County and other funders to acquire and build safe and sensible access points.
This hike starts at 10:00am in North Auburn. You will receive a confirmation email after completing the registration form. Do not share the directions with others.
The deadline to sign up is Noon the Friday prior to the event, or when the hike is full. Space is limited and our hikes typically fill up. Please only sign up if you will be attending so that you don’t take a spot away from someone else. You may sign up to bring family members living with you by adding their name on the registration form. We ask that friends and family not in your household register themselves.
