We are pleased to announce the permanent protection of Kotomyan Vista Preserve! This new preserve joins our Big Hill Preserves as part of an extensive block of protected lands the Raccoon Creek and Bear River watersheds. These lands are part of a total of nearly 9,000 acres protected by Placer Land Trust and our partner organizations, in one of the last remaining “wild” areas in western Placer County.

This project was able to move quickly thanks to early support from Emigrant Trails Greenway Trust. With that commitment in hand, we were able to secure highly competitive special grant funds from the Sierra Nevada Conservancy to complete the process. Donations made during last year’s Conservation Celebration Week also helped fund this project. Kotomyan Vista Preserve is our 75th land protection project, bringing our permanently protected acreage up to 18,335 acres!

The Kotomyan Vista name reflects the views of the Sacramento Valley from the preserve — the same views enjoyed by the Native Americans who resided in the nearby semi-nomadic Nisenan village of Kotomyan for thousands of years.  The village of Kotomyan may be gone, but the views and now this land will remain protected forever. The Nisenan name also honors the Native Americans who have stewarded this property in the past, and are part of our community today and into the future.
