Date & Time: Saturday, May 1 at 9:00am

Location: Taylor Ranch Preserve, North Auburn

About this event:
Kids — come spend a magical morning wandering, wondering and learning about nature at our Taylor Ranch Preserve. We’ll walk for about one mile exploring nature, take a little snack break, then finish down by the creek.

Who should attend: This event is designed to engage younger folks (between ages 4-10) who dig nature, scavenger hunts, love looking for cool creatures, and embrace dawdling along grassy trails. Sorry, no dogs allowed unless they are service animals (due to the potential conflicts with livestock and wildlife).

Bring snacks and water. Bring magnifying glasses, binoculars and sketching supplies if you have them. Dress in layers appropriate for the weather, waterproof shoes/boots are recommended. All children must be accompanied by an adult. This event is expected to be done around 11am.

Distance and difficulty: This will be an easy outing with only about a mile of hiking/walking exploring nature. Parts of the trail may be rough, muddy and uneven with possible potholes.

COVID-19 Protocol for our docent led hikes:
Please thoroughly read the PLT Covid-19 Safety Guidelines, which will be strictly enforced on our hikes. If you are not comfortable or able to comply with the safety guidelines, we respectfully ask that you do not sign up for the event.

About Taylor Ranch / Big Hill Preserves:
These preserves protect critical unfragmented oak woodlands in the Raccoon Creek and Bear River watersheds, and are part of one of the last relatively “wild” areas in western Placer County. The trails on these preserves meander past spectacular rock formations, the gently flowing Raccoon Creek, and panoramic views of the Sierra Nevada foothills and Sacramento Valley.

This is a free event; however, donations help make these activities possible! We suggest a donation of $10 per person (or $25 for family) made online when you register for the event. We can also accept checks/cash at the event if placed in an envelope with your name written on the envelope. Space is limited to a maximum of 12 people (including our docents).

  • Because space is limited, please only register if you will be attending so that you don’t take a spot away from someone else. You may only register yourself and family living in your household by adding their name(s) on the registration form. Any people outside of your immediate household must register themselves.
  • The deadline to sign up is 5pm on Thursday prior to the event, or when the event is full.
  • If you sign up and can no longer attend, please contact Janet by email.
  • Participants must sign a release of liability available here: Liability Waiver
  • Please print and bring it with you. One form per household. Parent signature is required for children under 18.

This activity is a wilderness outing in a natural setting. It is subject to cancellation in the event of extreme weather, bad air quality, rain, or other conditions beyond our control.

Directions to the Preserve will be emailed after registration. Check your spam folder if you do not receive the email within 15 minutes of registering.

Important Note: Our Big Hill, Harvego and Laursen Preserves, including the roads surrounding them, are not open to the public. Please help us respect the neighborhoods around these preserves by only visiting during scheduled guided activities that you are registered for. Trespassers will be prosecuted.
