When: Friday, May 15th at 8:00 am

Where: Clover Valley Preserve, Rocklin CA

Welcome to one of Placer Land Trust’s newest protected preserves, a gem in the middle of Rocklin! On this hike we will visit the many ecosystems recently preserved in this unique locale, including a rich wildlife corridor along a small year-round creek, with wetlands, beaver-dammed ponds, open meadows and oak woodlands.

Whether you are a beginning or expert birder, you are invited to join us! Our trained docents will help you look and listen for year-round residents and migrating songbirds, and hopefully some wetland bird species as well. We’ll practice basic birding identification skills and will get to know the common residents of the diverse habitat of this beautiful preserve. This is a partnered event by Placer Land Trust and the Sierra Foothills Audubon Society.

Please bring your binoculars to this outing!

Due to limited parking inside the preserve, we will be asking attendees to condense into a limited number of cars before we enter the preserve.

Distance and difficulty: This will be an easy outing with about 1.5 – 2  miles of walking, mostly on flat trails and old farm roads but will also traverse off-trail on uneven ground; some uneven terrain. We may walk off trail in tall grass. There are no facilities or water at the Preserve.

Who should attend: This event is open to all levels of birders; no prior experience necessary, and more advanced birders are welcome too. Younger children are not advised unless they can stay quiet. Sorry, no dogs allowed unless they are service animals (due to the potential conflicts with livestock and wildlife). Enrollment is limited to 12 people. We expect to be done around 11am.

This is a free event; however, donations help make these activities possible! We suggest a donation of $10 per person or $25 for a family. You can donate during registration, and we’re happy to accept cash or a check at the event in an envelope with your name written on it.

Registration:

  • Space is limited! Please only register if you will be attending so that you don’t take a spot away from someone else.
  • You may only register yourself and members of your immediate household. People outside of your household must register themselves.
  • Deadline to sign up is 5pm on Wednesday prior to the event (unless the event fills first.)

About Clover Valley Preserve:

Clover Valley is one of the last remaining intact sections of oak woodlands in western Placer County. This valley is home to a wide variety of ecosystems, wildlife habitat, and historic Native American sites. In one area of the valley, beavers have created a 20-acre wetland along Clover Valley Creek that is now home to a rare and threatened bird species, the California black rail. A stone’s throw away, you can see where Native Americans lived in harmony with nature for thousands of years.

Protecting Clover Valley was years and years in the making and took collaboration and joint fundraising efforts from many partners. To read about this huge success story and to learn more about this preserve please click here.

Directions to the Preserve will be emailed after registration. Check your spam folder if you do not receive the email within 15 minutes of registering.

Important Note: Clover Valley is NOT open to the public and can only be accessed as a registered guest during one of our hike events, like this one. Please help us respect the neighborhoods around this preserve by only visiting during scheduled activities that you are registered for. Trespassers will be prosecuted. Clover Valley Preserve is nestled amongst many residential communities and we ask that you drive slowly and respectfully.
