Just outside the Placer County community of Auburn, one of the largest concentrations of private land along the North Fork American River was recently purchased for conservation, a deal that will soon open a new hiking trail to one of Northern California’s most popular summertime river destinations.

A decades-old plan to develop estate homes overlooking the American River outside Auburn has given way to keeping 1,566 acres mostly as they are now.

There may not be a super bloom in California this year, but that doesn’t mean wildflower lovers have nothing to look forward to this spring and summer. The wet, colder weather we’ve experienced so far in 2024 hasn't made for the perfect conditions needed to produce a massive wildflower bloom, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to see outside right now.

Placer Land Trust and its partners have permanently protected Lincoln 595 Ranch, a large working rice and almond orchard ranch in western Placer County.

On Tuesday the Board of Supervisors took action to approve use of fund agreements in the amount of $910,000 towards the nonprofit Placer Land Trust’s acquisition of two agricultural easements of 595 acres at Koshman Ranch and 574 acres at Lincoln Ranch. Both properties are active farmland with rice and almond orchards and provide wildlife habitat and open space benefits in important waterways.

This 40-acre property is in the Moody Ridge area, near Alta, and represents a key piece within a large block of conserved lands. The section of the North Fork American River below the preserve is federally-designated “Wild and Scenic” – the top designation reserved for the highest quality, undammed rivers in the US.

185-acre addition protects oak woodlands, water quality, and wildlife

Placer Land Trust has permanently protected the 192-acre Spring Garden Preserve on Foresthill Divide near the community of Foresthill. Spanning the canyons and watersheds of the North and Middle forks of the American River, the property was initially marketed for development, given its easy access, gentle topography, views of the rivers and proximity to other residential developments. Instead, the landowners worked with Placer Land Trust to ensure the forested land will continue to be open space forever.
