Since 1991, Placer Land Trust has worked with willing landowners and conservation partners to preserve over 10,000 acres of natural and agricultural land in Placer County. Lone Buffalo Vineyards & Winery family members have been members and supporters of Placer Land Trust for many years, and  we’re delighted to partner via their jbrand series of wines on this special release honoring the California dogface butterfly!

The California dogface butterfly is the California state insect, but is quite rare due to its limited habitat. Little was known about its lifecycle prior to the butterfly being discovered on Placer Land Trust’s Shutamul Bear River Preserve, located in North Auburn, where it is being studied by representatives from UC Davis’ Bohart Museum of Entomology and Placer Land Trust volunteer Deren Ross. The sole food source of the California dogface butterfly caterpillar is the False Indigo plant, Amorpha californica, which thrives on our Shutamul and Laursen Bear River Preserves along the Bear River. These Preserves are home to the largest number of breeding California dogface known in the Sierra Nevada.

In addition to its natural values, the Shutamul and Laursen Bear River Preserves also contain archaeological sites dating to the Gold Rush and earlier. Nisenan and other Native Americans lived on this land for over 5,000 years. By protecting these lands, we’re preserving the habitat for this rare butterfly, the history of local Native Americans, and stretches of the Bear River for future generations to enjoy.

Your purchase of Lone Buffalo Dogface Syrah supports Placer Land Trust’s mission to protect these natural treasures forever. This limited addition Syrah is available now at Lone Buffalo Vineyards, supplies are limited. Stock up and buy an extra bottle or two for the holidays.
