Quick Facts:

  • 227 acres along Pleasant Grove Creek north of Roseville
  • Permanently protected since August 2005 through Placer Land Trust’s West Placer Habitat Protection Program

Public-Private Partnership for Conservation and Restoration

The City of Roseville owns this land, and Placer Land Trust holds the Conservation Easement permanently protecting the property from development and promoting habitat restoration. Reason Farms Environmental Preserve is contiguous to over 2,000 acres of privately owned land to the north that is also permanently protected by Placer Land Trust. To the south across the creek is 1000+ acres owned by the City of Roseville also sharing the name “Reason Farms” but otherwise not associated with the preserve; this adjacent City land is currently maintained as open space and agricultural land but is eventually proposed for development.

Grasslands

Native grasslands provide feeding grounds for Swainson’s hawk, listed as threatened by the State of California, and other native wildlife. Livestock graze on invasive plants reducing seed stock keeping fuel loads down and making room for native species.

Oak Woodlands

Oak woodlands act as a natural transition zone from riparian to grasslands providing nesting sites and habitat for native birds and mammals and shade for grazing livestock.

Vernal Pools and Riparian Habitat

Pleasant Grove Creek forms a riparian corridor through Reason Farms used by Great Blue Heron, egret, and trout. The City of Roseville has recreated vernal pools, historically present on this property, which can provide habitat for the endangered fairy shrimp.

Reason Farms Environmental Preserve is not open to the public. For a list of our properties that have public trails, visit our Trails page.
