The lifecycle of Placer Land Trust projects never ceases to amaze me. Since a conservation project can take years to complete, the number of acres we protect in a given year can fluctuate greatly. In 2021 we protected 11 acres by expanding a 5-year old preserve. Then in 2022, we created SIX new preserves totaling 2,990 acres — the most ever in a single year! And both years were equally great. Some years like 2021 allow us to turn inward and steward lands already in our care. In other years like 2022 we get to close multiple projects and protect as much land as possible. That’s just the nature of our work.
As exciting as numbers can be, they don’t tell the full story of these protected landscapes. These lands provide valuable benefits for generations to come. These lands allow people to make a living and feed their families. They’re places to get outdoors and experience the joy of spending time in nature. And they’re lands that protect wildlife and local communities from threats of a changing world. We hope the highlights in this Annual Community Report get you even more excited about what we can accomplish together looking forward.
New Protected Lands
Whiskey Run Ranch
This 197-acre working cattle and mixed livestock ranch is located north of Lincoln. It features high-quality grazing land, blue oak woodlands, and a quarter-mile stretch of Raccoon Creek, all of which are now permanently protected by an Agricultural Conservation Easement that allows the landowners to continue their agricultural operations. Doty Creek Ranch
Located near Lincoln, this working walnut orchard is now protected by an Agricultural Conservation Easement. With the rapid growth of the Lincoln area, hundreds or even thousands of acres of farmland are being converted to development every year. An easement allows landowners to realize some of the value that would have come from selling for development, while keeping their land in agricultural production. Read more
American River Headwaters Preserve
This 1,151-acre preserve is owned by CAL FIRE as a Demonstration State Forest to protect forest and watershed health, wildlife habitat, recreation and research opportunities, and more. It includes Sixmile Meadow, which is known for its beauty as well as its vital ecosystem functions. Placer Land Trust holds a Conservation Easement on the entire property, ensuring that it will be preserved forever. Read more
Bear River Headwaters Preserve
This 1,200-acre property is also owned by CAL FIRE as a Demonstration State Forest, serving to help California continue to learn about forests, timber harvest, public use, wildfire, and climate change. Placer Land Trust holds the Conservation Easement. The property is part of the headwaters of the Bear River, which contributes to the high quality of drinking water in Placer County. Read more
Bushamul Vernal Pool Preserve
This preserve is made up of approximately 211 acres of grasslands and 35 acres of wetlands, vernal pools, streams, and riparian zones. This diverse landscape provides critical habitat for wildlife (including endangered species such as vernal pool fairy shrimp), as well as scenic open space in the unincorporated area of Sheridan. Bushamul Vernal Pool Preserve was named for the nearby historic Nisenan village of Bushamul; the United Auburn Indian Community gave their approval for the use of the Nisenan name. Read more
Clementine Beach Preserve
Placer Land Trust purchased Clementine Beach Preserve from a willing seller to ensure continued public access to Upper Lake Clementine and to keep development away from the lakeshore. This new preserve contains a section of Upper Lake Clementine Road, which leads to the Upper Lake Clementine Day Use Area, as well as a stretch of beach where the North Fork American River enters Lake Clementine. No subdivision or residential development will ever occur on the Preserve. Read more

2022 gave us much to celebrate — from beautiful new protected lands, to hikes and adventures on our preserves, to the fun of gathering again in person with our members. Take a look back at the highlights of 2022 in our holiday video above!
In April 2022, we partnered with the Colfax-Todds Valley Consolidated Tribe to transfer ownership of 40 acres of forestland above the North Fork American River, considered by the Tribe to be part of their ancestral homelands. These lands are now officially known as Yo’ Dok’im Pakan – Gerjuoy North Fork Preserve. The Tribe is comprised of Nisenan, Maidu, and Miwok people of the Sierra Nevada mountains and foothills of Placer County, and they consider this land to be part of their ancestral homelands. Owning and managing natural land in its homelands supports the Tribe’s effort to restore federal recognition of the Colfax Rancheria, and provides a place to celebrate their traditions and put cultural and ecological knowledge into practice. Our Mission
Placer Land Trust works with willing landowners and conservation partners to permanently protect and care for natural and agricultural lands in Placer County for current and future generations.
Land Acknowledgment
The protected lands in Placer Land Trust’s care are the ancestral lands of the Maidu, Miwok, Nisenan and Washoe tribes. These lands were forcibly seized, and these tribes were unjustly treated. Although Placer Land Trust cannot change the past, we seek to work with local Native American tribes where we can to help address this injustice.
Forever Society Spotlight
We wanted to include Placer Land Trust in our estate planning because it has had such a significant impact on the preservation of our county’s natural environment in the face of tremendous growth and development. Our love of nature and wildlife brought us to Auburn 48 years ago, and we want our children and grandchildren to be able to experience the quality of life we have enjoyed and worked to protect.
We have been active in environmental protection through Placer Land Trust and Gold County Wildlife Rescue for many years. Dennis has been a longtime volunteer with the Land Trust’s Burrowing Owl habitat project in Lincoln, and Sharon served on the Placer Legacy Committee to identify and protect critical habitat and natural resources in the county. We enjoy hiking, birding, photography, and kayaking close to home, and appreciate that PLT is acquiring land or easements near Lake Clementine and Clover Valley.
Knowing that our beloved natural areas and wildlife species will continue to thrive in Placer County because PLT is actively working to expand and protect them gives us hope for the future.
