Thanks to the support of members like you, Placer Land Trust protected 3,966 acres this year, bringing our total to 18,930 acres preserved for generations to come!
And while that metric is an important one, it’s not the only measure we use to mark our success.
Partnerships are essential. Relationships with landowners are built on trust and patience, and can take many years to bear fruit. Stewardship of the 56 properties already under our care means ensuring the natural values and resources of each are preserved. But I believe the most durable indication of our impact is reflected in you — our community of supporters who give generously of their time, money, and enthusiasm.
As we look back at the highlights of 2023, I hope the highlights in this Annual Community Report get you even more excited about what we can accomplish together looking forward!
Highlights of 2023
Lincoln 595 Ranch
Protected in December, this 595-acre ranch produces rice and organic almonds. An Agricultural Conservation Easement permanently protects the property from subdivision and development while allowing the landowners to continue their agricultural operations. The rice land serves as important habitat for migratory birds who use the seasonally flooded rice fields and nearby wetlands as critical feeding and breeding areas. The ranch also contains a stretch of Markham Ravine, which flows west directly onto a restored historic vernal pool complex. Read more
Kotomyan Vista Preserve
In September, the 61-acre Kotomyan Vista Preserve joined our Big Hill Preserves as part of an extensive block of protected lands in the Raccoon Creek and Bear River watersheds. The Kotomyan Vista name reflects the preserve’s views of the Sacramento Valley — the same views enjoyed by the Native Americans who lived in the nearby Nisenan village of Kotomyan for thousands of years. The Nisenan name also honors the Native Americans who have stewarded this property in the past, and are part of our community today. Read more
Lower Bear Valley Preserve
Protected in July, the 2,457-acre Lower Bear Valley Preserve contains approximately 2 miles of the Bear River from Alta to Emigrant Gap. The land is owned by PG&E and contains hydropower infrastructure as well as vast areas of forest and wildlife habitat. A conservation easement by Placer Land Trust permanently protects the preserve from subdivision and limits development, protecting this beautiful watershed land for generations to come. Read more
Wise Forebay Preserve
Protected in June, this new preserve is part of PG&E’s hydroelectric watershed lands and contains foothill hardwood woodlands, seasonal wetlands, and aquatic habitat that are valuable for a diverse range of wildlife in the Upper Auburn Ravine watershed. The entire Wise Forebay Reservoir is located on the property, providing habitat for waterfowl and other migratory birds. Wise Forebay Preserve provides public access and recreation opportunities including fishing, hiking, birdwatching, and sightseeing. Read more
In July, Placer Land Trust and PG&E placed a conservation easement on Lake Valley Preserve, 836 acres along the North Fork of the North Fork American River near Emigrant Gap. Owned by PG&E, the land contains mixed forest and abundant wildlife habitat. Lake Valley Reservoir and Kelly Lake provide opportunities for camping, fishing, paddling, swimming, and picnicking. Placer Land Trust holds an easement on the preserve, protecting it from subdivision and limiting development. Read more
Restoring Oak Woodlands
Blue oak woodlands are a special habitat found on our Big Hill Preserves, but young oaks are vulnerable to damage from grazing and wildlife. This year, we began our Oak Regeneration Project to increase the number of oak saplings in areas where new trees struggle to get established. Staff and volunteers identify existing oak saplings and protect them with barricades that mimic natural oak “nurseries” to decrease predation from grazers like deer and cattle. Saplings are then carefully mapped for tracking. Read more
Canyon View Preserve Interpretive Trail and Gathering Space
This year, we redesigned the beloved Canyon View Preserve nature trail to offer fun learning opportunities while minimizing visual impact on the landscape. The new interpretive trail features marked posts identifying points of interest; visitors can pick up a brochure at the trailhead or scan the QR codes on each post to learn more about this beautiful preserve.
As part of the trail redesign we also created a new outdoor Gathering Space, honoring the memory of Andrea Roberta Young. The Gathering Space is open to all as a perfect spot for individuals or groups to unwind, be still, and take in the flora and fauna that thrive in this special place. We hope this gift to the community will inspire joy, togetherness, and wonder for generations to come.

Our Mission
Placer Land Trust works with willing landowners and conservation partners to permanently protect and care for natural and agricultural lands in Placer County for current and future generations.
Land Acknowledgment
The protected lands in Placer Land Trust’s care are the ancestral lands of the Maidu, Miwok, Nisenan and Washoe tribes. These lands were forcibly seized, and these tribes were unjustly treated. Although Placer Land Trust cannot change the past, we seek to work with local Native American tribes where we can to help address this injustice.
Forever Society Spotlight
When I was making my estate plan, I decided it is important for me to give in such a way that it would benefit generation after generation. Placer Land Trust has been an organization that I have supported for nearly 15 years. It ensures that nature is preserved and not turned to concrete, that animals can continue to thrive and live amongst us and that people have a place to quickly escape and reconnect with themselves through the connection with the earth. I moved to Placer county over 22 years ago because of the easy access to nature, trails and outdoor recreation and many of the people that I have helped to move here, over the last 8 years are doing so for the same reason. With population growth and sprawling cities, it is more important than ever, to preserve the balance and Placer Land Trust does so effectively!
