Dear Friends,
Every milestone achieved and new preserve celebrated reminds me how grateful I am for you—one of the community of supporters who bring Placer Land Trust’s mission to life. We don’t do our work alone, and 2025 highlighted how much richer our lives are when we partner with others.
It’s the ranchers who have watched agricultural lands disappear in Placer County and across the state who said, “I can do something about this,” and permanently protected their land. It’s the hundreds of donors and organizations who stood together and made it possible to finally protect the heart of Clover Valley. It’s the hundreds of volunteers who selflessly gave their time, talent, and sweat to the mission—making up the work of almost two full-time staff members. It’s the partnership with local Tribes who are educating us, along with others, on the value of cultural burning to prevent catastrophic wildfires for the safety of our communities and health of the land.
Our future success will depend more on the connections we build than the number of acres we protect. Land in Placer County continues to get more expensive, and resources at the state and federal levels for land conservation are diminishing. Even when that feels deflating, it’s always the people who rally to support our mission who give me hope. If Placer Land Trust is the vehicle by which our valued lands are protected, it’s YOU behind the wheel!
Thank you for being an integral part of the Placer Land Trust team. Together, we will create a lasting legacy in 2026 and long into the future.

Highlights of 2025
Clover Valley Preserve
Protected by Placer Land Trust in Spring of 2025, Clover Valley is one of the last remaining intact sections of oak woodlands in western Placer County. This valley is home to a wide variety of ecosystems, wildlife habitat, and historic Native American sites. In one area of the valley, beavers have created a 20-acre wetland along Clover Valley Creek – also home to a rare and threatened bird species, the California black rail. A stone’s throw away, you can see where Native Americans lived in harmony with nature for thousands of years.
Clover Valley has been under intense pressure from development for decades, with plans for 500+ single-family homes and roadways across the valley floor. For years, community members rallied together to hold off the construction of subdivisions, roads, and highways that would destroy this last wild place. Finally in 2025, working with the original landowner as a willing seller, Placer Land Trust secured enough funding from local foundations, local government entities and the community to permanently protect this land through a permanent conservation easement.
The 402-acre heart of Clover Valley is now protected forever by Placer Land Trust. The next step is working with partners on plans for long-term stewardship and new educational and recreational access. In the meantime, we are holding docent-led tours of the valley so that our community can experience and enjoy this place that you helped protect!

Vista Ranch
Located along the Bear River north of Lincoln, Vista Ranch has been used for cattle grazing for generations of local ranchers from the Church and Barrie families. Funding for the acquisition and permanent protection of the property came from Placer County fees that help offset the loss of oak woodlands and its associated wildlife habitat from rapid development in other areas of the County. Fee title ownership of the ranch is now held by Placer Land Trust; Placer County and the Placer Conservation Authority co-hold a conservation easement on the property.

Upper Ranch
At Upper Ranch, high-quality grazing land mingles with unfragmented blue oak woodlands and annual grasslands. Nearly a mile of Raccoon Creek runs through the ranch, providing a biodiverse range of wildlife habitat.
Ancestors of today’s Tahti, Fleming, and Bokisch families purchased Upper Ranch in the 1800s. In 2025, family members worked with Placer Land Trust to place an Agricultural Conservation Easement on the ranch, permanently protecting the land for future generations while allowing the family to continue agricultural operations.
Community Connections
Through partnering with community organizations, businesses, and local and regional agencies, we achieve so much more than going alone. Here are a few highlights of 2025!
The Auburn Symphony and Placer Land Trust collaborated for the second year with a “sold-out” free event, Symphony Under the Sky. Our partnership with Placer Artists Tour continues to deepen with plein air and photography events on our preserves, as well as the annual Natural Wonders Art Show.
The United Cerebral Palsy of Sacramento and Northern California has incorporated our “Ramble & Roam” children’s program into their annual programming, sharing the wonder of nature through hands-on fun in the outdoors. Cali Trail Seekers enjoyed a fantastic evening hike under the full moon, and not only that — their organizer Kemi Shemonda eagerly accepted our invitation to become a volunteer hike docent with us!
Community organizations joined us as “Habitat Heroes” to help remove invasive plants from Canyon View Preserve, and partnership also enabled us to implement prescribed burning with the Colfax-Todds Valley Consolidated Tribe and the Sierra Nevada Alliance.

Celebrating Conservation, Collaboration, and Traditions of Stewardship
We were honored to present the 2025 Placer Conservator Award to Colfax-Todds Valley Consolidated Tribe (CTVCT). A California State recognized Tribe of Nisenan, Maidu, & Miwok people of the Colfax/Placer County area, CTVCT has been working with Placer Land Trust for several years now, beginning with the our LandBack project of transferring Yo’ Dok’im Pakan – Gerjuoy North Fork Preserve to the Tribe and their affiliated nonprofit entity, the Koy’o Land Conservancy.
In 2025, Placer Land Trust and CTVCT continued our collaborative work together through the mutual exchange of conservation and stewardship learning and practices, securing joint grant funding, as well as moving forward on our upcoming Owl Creek LandBack and Equitable Access project.

Our Mission
Placer Land Trust works with willing landowners and conservation partners to permanently protect and care for natural and agricultural lands in Placer County for current and future generations.
Land Acknowledgment
The protected lands in Placer Land Trust’s care are the ancestral lands of the Maidu, Miwok, Nisenan and Washoe tribes. These lands were forcibly seized, and these tribes were unjustly treated. Although Placer Land Trust cannot change the past, we seek to work with local Native American tribes where we can to help address this injustice.
Forever Society Spotlight: Jeff & Candace Morton
“When I was growing up, my grandparents supported a retreat for children with disabilities called Camp Courageous in my home state of Iowa. This inspired me to get involved in community charities and nonprofits. My wife Candace and I have always been passionate about animals and recreation, and we wanted to help organizations that we felt connected to and that had missions that were close to our hearts.
“After Hidden Falls Regional Park opened up, I volunteered on a trail workday that was put on by REI and Placer Land Trust. That’s when I learned about Placer Land Trust’s mission and started to volunteer for various projects. Candace has also gotten involved, volunteering in many ways, including recently joining their Community Council. It is so rewarding to support Placer Land Trust now with contributions of our time and finances but also be able to help in the future. That’s why Candace and I decided to become members of the Forever Society by including a planned gift in our estate plans. We are really proud of what Placer Land Trust stands for and all it has accomplished, and we hope others will join us in helping protect land for future generations to appreciate.”
